Narrow Mount
Window Shades
Custom shades for windows that are too narrow or too shallow for standard brackets, with expert guidance on the right inside-mount strategy.
The Challenge
When the opening is tight, the details matter.
Many windows look simple until it is time to mount the shade. The frame may be too narrow for a standard bracket. The recess may have only minimal depth. The handle, sash, or glazing bead may sit exactly where a conventional inside mount needs to land. That is when standard window treatments start to fail.
Our narrow mount window shades are selected for these tight conditions. We work with clients who need shades for narrow frame windows, inside mount shades for shallow windows, and low-profile treatments that preserve a clean architectural look without forcing an awkward outside mount.
Instead of guessing, we evaluate the true usable depth, the frame width, the handle clearance, and the way the window opens. Selected pleated and honeycomb systems can use as little as ½ inch (about 13mm) of secure mounting surface. The slimmest pleated construction is approximately ⅞ inch (22mm) deep; our tensioned honeycomb construction is approximately 1 inch (25mm) deep.
Tight Opening?
We can tell you quickly whether a narrow mount is realistic.
Good Candidates
- —Narrow frame windows
- —Shallow recess windows
- —Minimal inside mount depth
- —European and aluminum frames
- —Windows with trim or hardware conflicts
Our Approach
Slim-profile systems chosen around the window, not forced onto it.
For narrow mounts, the best answer is usually a system with a small visual footprint and precise tolerances. Tensioned pleated shades and honeycomb shades are especially strong candidates because they can be tailored to narrow frames and mounted cleanly without bulky hardware.
Where appropriate, we also specify select roller systems with reduced bracket depth, alternative mounting strategies, or frame-integrated solutions. The goal is to maintain an inside-mount appearance whenever possible while making sure the shade clears the sash, handle, and glass line properly.
Because small openings leave little room for error, we measure to the millimeter. That is what separates a clean narrow mount from a shade that rubs, binds, or sits visibly off-center.

What We Consider
Our specialty is knowing which “narrow” problem you actually have.
True Mounting Depth
We look at usable depth, not just the full recess measurement, because trim returns and glazing beads change the real number.
Frame Width
Some windows are wide enough overall but too narrow at the actual bracket points. That detail drives the right system choice.
Operating Hardware
Handles, cranks, and latches often matter more than the opening itself. We make sure the shade clears them in daily use.
Window Movement
If the sash tilts or swings inward, the right answer may be a frame-mounted system rather than a conventional inside mount.
Common Questions
Narrow mount shade FAQ
What are narrow mount window shades?
They are shades chosen for windows with limited frame width, shallow recess depth, or both. The system needs slim hardware, exact measurements, and enough clearance to operate without rubbing the frame or hardware.
Can shallow windows still have an inside mount?
Often yes. Selected pleated and honeycomb systems can use as little as ½ inch of secure mounting surface. Pleated systems are approximately ⅞ inch deep and honeycomb systems approximately 1 inch deep. The frame shape, handle, glass, and attachment still need review.
What are the best shades for narrow frame windows?
Tensioned pleated shades, honeycomb shades, and select slim-profile roller systems are usually the strongest options. The best choice depends on available width, depth, fabric preference, and whether the window tilts or swings inward.
Do you work with narrow mount projects nationwide?
Yes. We serve local clients in New York and the Northeast and also help clients across the US choose the right shade system, measurement strategy, and custom fabrication approach.
The Sustainable Shades Difference
Uncommon windows call for uncommon precision.
Homeowners, architects, and designers come to us with beautiful windows that have very little mounting depth, narrow frames, inward movement, or hardware exactly where an ordinary bracket would go. We resolve the fit quietly—with premium European systems, exacting measurement, and a finish that belongs in the room.
